Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, also known as Baikal skullcap, is a source of baicalin, one of the main ingredients of the Baicapil™ complex. Baikal skullcap is a biennial plant with blue-violet flowers, growing to be about 1,2 m tall. It flowers from May to August and produces fruit in late August.
Baikal skullcap is native to China, Russia, Mongolia and the Korean Coast. It belongs to Lamiaceae (deadnettle) family comprising over 350 plant species many of which demonstrate medicinal properties. Baikal Skullcap is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is also widely used in Nepal, Japan and Korea.
The roots of Baikal Skullcap contain high levels of flavonoids.
Flavonoids are natural herbal substances with strong anti-oxidative properties.
Flavonoids are responsible for the immune defence mechanisms in plants and provide similar immuno-enhancing effects when delivered into the human body.
They are commonly found in flowers, fruit, seeds, leaves and roots, giving the plants their characteristic colour, taste and smell (for instance, high levels of flavonoids are found in dark‑coloured berries).
Soybean grows up to the height of 1.5 m. It has trifoliate leaves which begin to descend before the seeds are mature. It also has small white-yellowish or purple blue flowers. The fruit is a woolly, crescent shaped pod containing between 2-6 white-yellow to brown, smooth, spherical seeds. Soybean originates from the Far East where it has traditionally been part of the staple diet. Presently, soybean is grown across many regions of the world with moderately warm climate.
Common wheat belongs to the Poaceae family of plants (Gramineae – the grasses). Common wheat is classified as cereals. It is a vigorous plant with a straight and hollow stem and spiky leaves. The inflorescence is a panicle or spikelet. The flowers produce single fruit called seeds. Each seed consists of a germ and reserve materials.
Common wheat originates from ancient Mesopotamia, but it is grown all over the world, from near the Arctic regions to the equator. It is capable of adapting to different growth environments from xerophilic to coastal.
Baicapil™ contains soybean and wheat sprouts rich in carbohydrates. The sprouts contained in the Baicapil™ complex derive from seeds that germinated in the presence of clean water, without any added chemicals or pesticides. The germination process is discontinued after 3 days i.e. after the active biomolecules (peptides, amino acids, oligosaccharides and glucose) have reached their maximum levels.
